All that was advertisedNov 22, 2009 The Philips Norelco T980 Turbo Vacuum Trimmer allowed me to achieve and maintain the beard length I was seeking more precisely and efficiently than any other trimmer I have owned. (My wife especially likes the job it does.) The vacuum function works well and makes clean-up a ten-second job. The battery provides a couple week's worth of uses before it needs recharging, which takes a bit over an hour. The somewhat bulky size to accommodate the vacuum unit requires an initial adjustment if you're used to smaller units. The nine-position trimming guard allows you to work down to the length you want and prevents accidental mess-ups. This tool gets my most enthusiastic endorsement.
Just Okay. Too Many DeficienciesNov 22, 2009 Unfortunately I have to agree with some of the more critical reviews of this product. I say unfortunately, because the vacuum actually works pretty good. But there are just too many other problems with this trimmer to recommend it. Most namely, it keeps breaking. I'm on my fourth unit in 2 years. Luckily it does have a 2 year warranty and Philips/Norelco has been terrific at replacing them. But, still, this continually breaking is a problem. I think this is mostly due to the cheap plastic build.
I also agree with another review in regards to the ON/OFF and Turbo buttons being in a bad location. Because these buttons are where the fingers naturally sit to hold the trimmer I'm constantly, unintentionally, turning the trimmer off. This is very annoying. And I too have had the unit change to a shorter setting during use. Also very annoying.
Works Great!Nov 20, 2009 Very fast with little (if any) cleanup required thanks to the built-in vacuum functionality. Would have been great if it came with a stand; just an opportunity for improvement. Amazon price was significantly less than retail (25%). Great shaver for beard or goatee.
Worlds greatest trimmerNov 16, 2009 This is by far the greatest trimmer I have ever own, love the Turbo , no hairs anywhere, works great
A Review just for the Sake of ReviewingNov 16, 2009 There are plenty of reviews on this trimmer so I won't go into detail - but I did want to make sure I rated the item. I think overall the trimmer is a good product - it does what it is supposed to do. After a few months of use (1-2 times a week), I developed my own pro's con's for the trimmer. It replaced a very cheap Remington trimmer that I had for years (the rechargable battery no longer held a charge) and although I know "change" can be tough after using something for several years, there are a few things I just can't get past.
1. having to remove the general trimmer and replace it with the mini trimmer is more of a PITA than I thought it would be. My old Remington had a built in mini-trimmer that flipped up on the back side - nothing to remove - just flip up and use. On the Philips, pulling the gate off and swapping the basic trimmer for the mini trimmer is pretty annoying. Granted it's not that big of a deal in the grand scheme of life or my morning routine, but it is still pretty annoying. When you remove the gate and start swapping parts, some of the hair that did make its way into the vacuum chamber now gets scattered about again.
2. many have complained about the height adjustment changing on them... I have not encountered this. I can add that for me, none of the settings match my old Remington. This is not so much a reflection on the product, but more of a: "keep in mind, you'll have to adjust to this new product's height - it doesn't adjust to you". I keep my hair short and for me 3 is too long and 2 is too short. I needed a 2.5. I find that if I press really hard in the 3 setting, I can get close, but it seems to take a lot of work. Again, not so much a complaint on the product, just personal preference.
3. For whatever reason, I can not seem to get the hairs on my lip that are close to the underside of my nose. The trimmer gate seems to be so bulky that it hits my nose before the cutter can clip the hair. I have to remove the gate and carefully trim the hairs using the height of the surrounding hairs that the trimmer did get as a guide.
Other than those three annoyances, I can live with the vacuum not catching ALL of the hair (the Remington flung ALL of the hair everywhere). Battery life seems solid, but I guess only time will tell. Someone else mentioned they wished it came with a stand and I concur - it would be nice. Overall it's a solid product and for those with a lot of facial hair, I bet this would be a great purchase.
